We welcome you to the Nicky May Website which
will be devoted to collectors
of this unique ware. We are also pleased to be able to bring you Art which reflects
the passion and beauty of Nicky's life. Please be sure to this site as we will regularly be
adding new items for sale as well as other interesting features that you won’t
want to miss out on. Having decided to "live the dream !" and move to the South West, after many years spent overseas with Voluntary Service Overseas and Oxfam, Nicky learnt to pot at Sunningwell School of Art and the Royal Forest of Dean College, and came to a small village in North Cornwall. She has set up a small studio where she can indulge her love of Pottery, and painting. The South West is the perfect location for the sort of inspiration required to create beautiful pottery and wonderful art, this being reflected in the colours and mood seen in her work. She also draws inspiration from her years working with women's groups in Kenya, and this can be seen in the shapes of many of her pots. Nicky May Ceramics is a small business specialising in an exclusive form of hand made pots, each being unique and entirely individual. Many are frost-resistant and so are suitable for both house and garden. All Nicky's work is three dimensional and not only does it need to be viewed and admired, but the pieces should be touched to appreciate their qualities. Each pot is built by hand, some are burnished and fired in sawdust to create soft sheen and subtle shadow. Their rounded forms are accentuated by carving and polishing with beeswax, to give a sense of energy and sensuality. They combine the inspiration of Cornwall's rugged beauty with shapes that have their roots in Africa, but also in bronze and iron age pottery in Britain. Others are high-fired to be frost-resistant, but are left unglazed, leaving the texture of "naked clay" Commissions are undertaken and we welcome any enquiries, just state your requirements. All pieces are for sale either mail order or can be purchased from many outlets throughout the Southwest UK. Should you wish to visit the studio please telephone or write and a suitable time can be arranged, the contact numbers are listed in the Menu to the left. |
